What

Rainbow Community Kampuchea (RoCK) commissioned Kantar TNS Cambodia to conduct a study to objectively verify and better understand the situation of the LGBT population in Cambodia, especially from the perspective of straight Cambodians. Key findings have been used by RoCK, a non-profit organisation, for strategic planning and the improvement of program implementation.

How

Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were applied to the research on opinions, attitudes and behaviours toward the LGBT population. The 2015 study was representative of the Cambodian population, taking eight focus group discussions to uncover personal narratives and experiences in order to better understand the trends that came to light throughout the research. The sample consisted of both straight and LGBT respondents. The study was followed up in 2017 and the data was then analysed which supported the creation of case studies with participants in order to demonstrate the effects of the RoCK program.

Impact

The study provided significant insight into the issues that LGBT communities face in Cambodia. This led to RoCK providing its first training on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) and LGBT human rights to the straight community. While these workshops are proving useful there is still much further to go when it comes to education and acceptance of the LGBT community and RoCK continues to aim to improve the lives of LGBT people.
